AIDAN’S WAY
In October 2021 I walked 300 miles on my own from the Scottish island of Iona to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in the footsteps of the 7th century Celtic saint Aidan. Honestly? It was… life changing.
My publisher asked me to do it again, but this time to let others share in the journey…
Here are the 21x video diaries from that very special trip.
There is also an accompanying 21 day devotional with Lectio365.
And a book will be coming out in 2027.
DAY 1: Iona
"Kicking off our daily video diary on the Island of Iona - in which Charlie Kang and Rich Dawson take note of my antiquity and need some serious convincing about the contemporary relevance of Celtic Christianity.
DAY 2: ISLE OF MULL
Isle of Mull: Day 2 - in which Charlie and Rich CHEAT (and we get eaten)
DAY 3: ROAD OF THE KINGS
Road of the Kings: Day 3 - in which we (finally) think a bit about St Aidan himself, and unexpectedly get into ‘Breath Prayer’
DAY 4: DALMALLY
Dalmally: Day 4 - in which we discover Craig Lodge, a Catholic House of Prayer deep in the heart of the Highlands with its own gun room! We also chat about the historical and contemporary significance of pilgrimage, the lost art of ‘underwhelming’, and @rich_dawson_music our resident minstrel somehow knocks out another lovely song. Dalmally’s most famous son is John Smith QC, the late, great politician whose sudden death made way for Tony Blair to lead the British Labour Party. It’s a little known fact that this great men cultivated the private habit of stepping away from the frenzy of Westminster at least once a year for a solitary retreat on Iona where he would spend time in prayer kneeling late into the night in its ancient abbey.
DAY 5: CRAIG’S LODGE HOUSE OF PRAYER
Day 5 - in which Calum Macfarlane-Barrow a 91 year-old former poacher turned huntsman, farmer and artist, explains the potency of ‘body prayer’, and how pilgrimage has changed the entire trajectory of his life.
DAY 6: ST JOSEPH’S CELL
St. Joseph’s Cell: Day 6 - shorter one today in which we discover a hermitage in the hills and reflect upon solitude as 'the place of the great struggle and the great encounter…' Apologies for embarrassing outtakes at the end.
DAY 7: LOCH LOMOND
Loch Lomond: Day 7 - in which God speaks through a bunkhouse window, a sad announcement must be made, and we reflect on the significance of Fathers Day.
DAY 8: BALMAHA
Balmaha: Day 8 - it’s like an episode of Survivor without the bikinis and a bit more, um, God. In this plodcast we make a difficult decision, I crack perhaps the worst joke of all time, and Charlie Kang becomes an actual troll.
DAY 9: GOOD NIGHT CHARLIE
Day 9 - In which Charlie Kang finally sadly leaves, Rich Dawson drops his glasses off a dam (look carefully at 02:02), and I get … personal." - Pete Greig “Today there are many in the Church who act like canals, the reservoirs are far too rare… The canal simultaneously pours out what it receives; the reservoir retains the water till it is filled, then discharges the overflow without loss to itself. Learn to await this fullness before pouring out your gifts, do not try to be more generous than God“ - Bernard of Clairvaux
DAY 10: DRYMEN
Drymen: Day 10 - in which I go green, brave a herd of Shetland ponies, and try to convince @rich_dawson_music about the merits of crocs.
DAY 11: KILSYTH
Kilsyth: Day 11 - in which we discuss dad jokes, the spirituality of slowing down, and the surprising significance of a cyclist playing techno (plus a super-embarrassing confession about today’s Lectio 365 right at the end 😳)
DAY 12: LINLITHGOW
Linlithgow, Day 12 - in which we reflect on the relationship between prayer & creativity, the significant merits of sleeping in certain toilets, and Rich Dawson somehow knocks out another beautiful song.
DAY 13: NEIDPATH CASTLE
In which we just kinda hang out at a castle discussing today’s Lectio 365, while Rich Dawson premieres his best song yet, accompanied by a barking dog and a (particularly gifted) blackbird.
DAY 14: INNERLEITHEN
Day 14: Innerleithen - in which we discuss the enneagram and spiritual warfare during a thunderstorm, and @rich_dawson_music nearly poisons himself drinking holy water.
DAY 15: MELROSE
Day 15: in which we finally make it to Melrose Abbey, discuss the amazing life of Cuthbert, ‘canny-ness’, the burning priority of prayer, the heart of healthy leadership, and the wonderful world of work.
DAY 16: MAXTON KIRK
Day 16: In which @rich_dawson_music makes a shocking confession regarding Lectio 365, while we sit around in a graveyard discussing death - the ultimate pilgrimage - and other cheery subjects
DAY 17: BLUE CUBES & COWPATS
Day 17 - in which we attempt to burn a cowpat, acknowledge rogue emotions and discuss the power of contemplative prayer while Rich Dawson tries to play a song without breathing.
DAY 18: WOOLER
Day 18 - in which we cross from Scotland 🏴 into England 🏴, Rich Dawson gets a bit too Celtic, and we stumble upon a little-known place where a baptism service once lasted all day, dawn to dusk, continued the next day, and didn’t stop for 36 days straight.
DAY 19: St CUTHBERT’S CAVE
Day 19 - in which we shelter from the rain in St Cuthbert’s Cave, discuss unfulfilled prophecy and, um, Elton John, while @rich_dawson_music knocks out another stunning song inspired by Aidans Way written and released on the road.
DAY 20: LINDISFARNE
Day 20: after almost 3 weeks walking I’m crossing the sands to Lindisfarne at low tide on the old pilgrim trail. It’s utterly exhilarating, captured in a final, powerful song by Rich Dawson.
DAY 21: HOLY ISLAND
Day 21: Lindisfarne - sadly the final episode of The Pilgrim Podcast in which we explore Holy Island, and try to process all that’s happened over the past three weeks walking from Iona to Lindisfarne in the footsteps of Saint Aidan.
